22nd – 28th May 2007
An outdoor, promenade production for children aged 5+, performed in Cammo Estate, Edinburgh
A glass slipper. A trail of feathers marking the path back through a dark wood. Rapunzel’s plaits fall from a high window. A red cape and a basket of fruit. And, of course, a dragon.
Grid Iron’s Once Upon A Dragon, was the UK premiere of Pauline Mol and Moniek Merkx’s sophisticated play for five years and up – their youngest audience to date.
Set in an animated wood of twists and turns, the play, in a lyrical and passionate translation by Rina Vergano,
accepts that the Grimm stories are the currency of a young audience and celebrates the way young children play with familiar fairy stories.
More dextrous, more playful, more ‘post-modern’ than older children or adults, the young mind finds pleasure in re-ordering these powerful narratives.

What The Press Said
“It’s difficult to think of any children’s show I’ve ever seen that more perfectly fulfils the remit of taking us, for while, into a world of strange, frightening magic and archetypal adventure. And if the achingly beautiful setting at Cammo, on a lovely May night, plays a major part in creating that effect, then Grid Iron, as usual, are the company with the inspiration to find that place for us, and – with a touch of producer Jude Doherty’s magic wand and director Ben Harrison’s book of spells – to transform the wood into the enchanted one of our dreams… work that’s lavish, vivid, and full of the kind of cutting-edge acting without which no setting, however gorgeous, can come to life.”
“Grid Iron’s site-specific work for adult audiences has been acclaimed worldwide, now they’ve poured their skills into a fabulous treat for children. Go while you can.”
“Pauline Mol and Moniek Merkx’s Once Upon A Dragon, is given an inventive outdoor production by Ben Harrison for Grid Iron. The Dutch play mixes and matches a plethora of fairy tales – including Hansel and Gretel – in a way that celebrates the liveliness of a child’s imagination. It’s delightful on a spring evening to follow the buoyant cast as they stomp their way from ruin to glade past a landscape decorated with dragon eggs, poisoned apples and feathers of princes turned into crows.”
“As Grid Iron lead their young audience from the gate of Edinburgh’s verdant Cammo Estate, through a boulevard lit by flaring torches and into the forest, there are many signs of the stylish details that is the company’s trademark.”
