It has been February for over a hundred days.

Flight has been banned and no-one is to speak or think of it ever again.

While the townspeople talk of war, Bianca and her parents try to understand the mysterious sadness that has engulfed their community.

Adapted in collaboration with an ensemble of artists from the novel by Shane Jones and combining live music, sumptuous language and visual story-telling, Light Boxes’ dreamlike prose is brought to life in a single space, fully transformed into perpetual winter, by multi award-winning Fringe regulars Grid Iron.

What The Press Said

“This is truly a Fringe experience like no other. It has all the ingredients of a masterpiece, executed impeccably by Grid Iron.”

“There’s a gorgeous sense of hand-knitted magic to den Hertog’s production, from the way the cast of Melody Grive, Keith Macpherson and Vicki Manderson split the narrative between them as if telling a bedside story for dystopian times, to the way they play fiddle and junkyard percussion to accompany Michael John McCarthy’s live backwoods slow-core score.”

“Light Boxes is an audio visual masterstroke… good versus evil rarely looks this pretty.”

“a beautifully controlled piece of fantastical indie escapism.”

“This is an impeccable production, make no mistake. And there is much to marvel at as Grid Iron once more prove themselves to be one of Scotland’s most relevant, resourceful and committed companies.”

“Light Boxes takes you on a raw emotional journey that engulfs your every sense… a powerful piece of theatre, just as beautiful as it is thought-provoking.”

“Karen Tennent’s set design, supported by Simon Wilkinson’s lights and music from the company, is simply sublime. We are surrounded by trees with foil balloons in the sky, woodchips beneath our feet and the smell of mint in the air. It is truly breath-taking… Director Finn den Hertog’s vision is extraordinary making this a fairy tale on a grand scale. The performances are exceptional and Michael John McCarthy’s music adds a wonderful layer… a theatrical experience we will remember for years to come.”

“beautiful and haunting.”
